About Us

General Overview

GTEC is divided into essentially two entities, the club and the team. Both groups meet together at our bi-weekly meetings held Thursday nights at 7PM to discuss club happenings, arrange team outings, and discuss all things horse.

The Club

The club is the portion of the team that does not compete. Members are encouraged to join our bi-weekly meetings, lesson with our trainers and team members, and come to all of our events. Basically, this is the part of the club for people who are not interested in showing. As a club, we do two trail rides a year, one fall semester and one spring semester. These trail rides are a great way to bond with your fellow horse enthusiast at a school that provides only a small avenue to ride. The trail rides are generally over night events and are fully optional for all riders. Club members are also encouraged to attend our fund raising benefit show (mentioned in detail later), the IHSA show(s) we host, and lesson with our trainers.

The Team

Team members fall under the umbrella of the GT Equestrian Club, as well as being team members. They are the “varsity” portion of the club. The team is the group of riders who show in IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association www.ihsainc.com) sanctioned shows in our region. We compete against the other schools in our region (Zone 5, Region 2): Berry College, Emory University, Furman University, Georgia State University, Lander University, University of Georgia, University of South Carolina Aiken, Clemson University, Erskine College, Judson College, North Georgia College and State University, and University of South Carolina. Riders who show can be of any skill level; IHSA classes range from walk/trot to 3’ open fences. Our shows differ from most shows in one major way. The day of the show, we arrive at the venue and draw our horse out of a hat. We are not allowed to warm this horse up (other than one warm up jump prior to a course), and must compete on the horse we draw. Our rides are judged entirely on our equitation. How the horse shows is generally set aside, as we ride both exceptional horses, and those lacking in show experience. Our team is funded in part by the Georgia Tech Student Government Association, but is mostly funded by our own efforts. All of the team’s show entries are paid for by the club, as well as much of their travel expenses. We strive to provide all riders the opportunity to show with our team.
